Help us get to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019!

We are raising £1,500 to take Steven Berkoff's "East" back to the Edinburgh fringe festival which will allow us to showcase our adaption of this elegy to the east and its energetic waste.

Who are we?

The cast and creative team of "EAST" are thrilled to be representing HiveMCR this year. HiveMCR is made up of students from The University of Manchester who are all passionate about theatre, with many of us hoping to establish ourselves within the industry following graduation. We are delighted to be offered a chance to partake in this unforgettable experience, and develop a skill-set which we can carry into our future careers. The company was created as a sub division of The University of Manchester Drama Society as a way of allowing students from all different academic backgrounds to work together to create Fringe worthy theatre.

From the left: Kate Ireland (Assistant Director), Joe Llewelyn (Mike), Katie Rooney (Co-producer), Abby Moss (Sylv), Gary Gannon (Mum), Tom Bass (Les), Rosie Thackeray (Director), Rory Greenwood (Dad) and Hugh Summers (Co-producer)

Last year, HiveMCR were fortunate enough to take our fellow students up to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in two fantastic shows, POMONA and Duck Gutters:

POMONA: “The cast showcase student theatre at its best.” - EDFRINGEREVIEW

Duck Gutters: "...an excellent Fringe debut." - TheStudentNewspaper

In order for us to continue pursuing our dreams, we need your help!

Our Story

Now you know our names"

This year, HiveMCR are making an ambitious move to take "EAST" by Steven Berkoff to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2019! The dark comedy provides a vivid snapshot of working class East End life in the 1970s: characters Mike, Les and Sylv fight the torrent of their youth against the backdrop of their parent's domestic lives, and a rapidly changing London landscape. An homage to the writer's own upbringing, the play lends voice to violent escapades, sexual depravity and the all-consuming fear of being trapped by the circumstances you are born in to. "EAST" premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 1975: 44 years later, we aim to bring the play home again - and with the help of your donations we can make this happen!

This project is really important to us for a number of different reasons, with the first being its use as a platform from which the false stigmatisation of student theatre can be disputed. As a group we hope to challenge people’s perceptions of such theatre: providing an immersive, stylish and visceral performance that will stun the audience. For many of the cast and creative team, this project marks our debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival - an experience which will hopefully become the first of many!

We want to make this opportunity as accessible as possible for all of our team; the money we raise will help to cover the costs of our production, and facilitate its journey to the north! By donating, you will be helping to fund our passion and careers and fight against those who do not see the value in youth theatre.

Where will the money go?

If we hit our minimum funding target we’ll spend it on:

  • Contribution to venue hire: £271.60
  • Licensing fees: £518.40

If we hit our full target then the additional money will go on:

  • Publicity (including flyers): £200
  • Insurance fees: £100
  • Props and costume (including transport and storage) £400

If things really take off and we raise more than our target then we’ll use the extra funds to alleviate the costs of our props and accommodation.

We will keep you updated weekly via Instagram and every few days on Twitter, detailed down below.

Help us succeed!

If you are unable to donate money (we are students after all!) we would be so grateful if you could continue to share this project with people who could contribute to our fundraising on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, by email, telephone, in a chat over the fence or on your blog. The more people who know, the better our chances of making this amazing experience a reality for all involved.

You don't need to give money to help us, but we'd love it if you did! Please sponsor us and help make this happen.

We are so thankful for your support in recognising our cause and believing in the power of student theatre!
